After a bit of a delay, I got down to notching the next top piece with a jigsaw.
Since I didn't have a single board deep enough to fit this whole area, we had to use two smaller pieces. First one in place:
Before going further, I thought it might help to add a support piece underneath on the right side.
Test-fitting all the top pieces. Pretty decent fit. I took the palm sander to all three pieces to smooth them up a bit.
Screws temporarily in place. A little tedious, but we got it done.
We're taking a break for tomorrow so I can catch up on errands. Before I can place the insulation in this box, we need to add a couple of 2x3 supports underneath the front edge for additional stability.
The last thing for the day was prepping this cabinet door, which was removed from the counter area a while back. I'm going to clean it up a bit, and install it above the shelves between the stove and the door.
