I arrived in Pine yesterday morning, but we had visitors planned, so I knew the work would most likely really start today. I got everything out of the trailer and set up the tools last night, though.
The day ended up being divided into three stages: painting, construction and demolition.
First up was more paint on the cabinet door backs. The closet door got a final coat, so once I clean up the hardware, it'll be ready to hang again. The two cabinet doors in play got second coats, and the large door under the counter got a first coat.
The wood leaning against my truck is a thin sheet of plywood that I picked up in Payson on the way up, to be used for closing off the lower portion below the nook (among other things).
Onward to stage 2. The nook shelf got a front-center support. I added a small board to bridge the front and back center supports and to neaten up that sloppy spot where the bottom shelves meet.
The circular saw was on deck for round two of shelf cutting. The first one in place:
Due to another fuckup on my part, I had to re-cut the second shelf. Finally in place - the nook is taking shape!
I almost opted to start cutting up that sheet of plywood, so I could close off that little space below the nook, but instead I chose to start ripping out the damaged areas above.
With the oscillating multi-tool, I cut away the water-damaged wall to the left of the window...and, no insulation? What the hell, Shasta?
Cutting further, same with the next compartment. But I can see a tuft sticking out from above, so it must just be the ones next to the window. I'm curious as to why they skipped insulation here.
That bottom piece is gross and has got to go. Ew...
Moving to the other side of the window, I marked and cut the damaged area with the oscillating multi-tool to have a look inside...
Fiberglass above, but nothing below again.
The frame around the bottom of the window is so badly rotted that I'm going to have to cut most of it away.
When I cut and pulled away the rest of the panel to the right, the rotted bottom frame piece came out with it. Ugh. I'm going to have to rebuild the whole lower portion of this area.
Starting to cut away the rotted areas around the window. I'm going to have to do some creative bridging to fix this.
Bad wood cut away on the right side:
I cut the first piece to repair the bottom-left area, but it was a tight space that I can't get the drill into. I hunted around the trailer for the drill angle adapter that I'm positive I bought a few months ago, but couldn't find it. We're going to the farm again in the morning to help with assembling a greenhouse, but while I'm in town I'll swing by Harbor Freight. I'm also almost out of Black Truffle paint, so a Home Depot stop is in order too.
