Before putting any boards up, I had to add an extension to the ceiling stud, so the boards would have something to attach to. I used the rest of that length of hardwood from a recent Home Depot trip:
To compensate for the slope of the ceiling, I decided to add a board to act as a "step" so the ceiling outside of the shelf will be close to the levelness of the ceiling inside:

Closing in on being done with this section of the ceiling. One more day...
