Day 31

After I left my parent's house for the day on the 25th, the Cubic stove arrived... just in time for us to cut the platform that it will be sitting on.

I wanted to get a rough idea of how the stove will look in place...

Next up: cutting the thin plywood sheet down for the front and side panels. Dad quickly whipped up a wooden piece to act as a gauge to set the distance between the cut line and the straight edge that the saw is moving against. Pretty clever! The gauge is in the lower middle. We ended up using an 8 foot board as our straight edge.

Front piece cut:

In order to have a surface to drive screws into when mounting the panels, we had to install corner pieces in the frame. Two of the four that we installed:

I sanded the top platform to give it a nicer appearance - still not sure how I want the finish to look. I also cut a notch with the jigsaw so it fits up against one of the support posts (visible in the second image). The front panel is temporarily held in place with a couple of small bricks. All panels will be mounted when we continue this in a few days:

There will be two more short 2x3 supports added underneath the panel (at the edge) for stabilization. That space will be used for firewood storage.

One last test fitting of the little stove for fun!

We'll be back on Thursday (library day off - Cesar Chavez day) to continue the work!
