Day 27

Before we got into working on the counter, I did a bit of work on the closet. My plan was to install a second bar against the left wall and place a shelf across the two, forming what will be my "medicine cabinet" area.

At the start of the trailer build, I had removed two Tap Lights from the walls next to the front windows. Today I installed one of them as my closet light.

Second bar secured in place:

At first, I had thought to get a new piece of wood for the counter top, but in the interests of using up scrap (and saving money), we both agreed on reusing the old plank of plywood that had been placed (unsecured) atop the cabinets in place of a real counter. Note the burned spot - most likely from the propane space heater the former owners used. Anyway...it's a decent, straight and sturdy piece of wood, and it didn't require too much wood filler-repair, so we took a chance.

Setting up the plank for the initial cut to get it closer to size. Because we've modified the cabinets to correct a warping issue, the counter top will actually have to be cut slightly askew to match, but it shouldn't be noticeable to the eye.

I skipped documenting all of the fine tuning we had to do with jigsaws, planers, rasps and sanding. Here's the future counter test-fitted in place (before Dad added the wood filler putty to all of the cracks and knots):

While I was working on measuring, cutting and sanding that closet shelf, he installed three more pieces of wood for support in the access opening beneath the cabinets. Note the notch cut in the bottom piece, so that the lock on the little door can still be turned and used.

The pieces being held in place with a clamp.

The more-or-less finished shelf for the closet:

I'd been wanting to dismantle the framework that covers the wheel well on the door-side of the trailer. Probably doing it tomorrow if there is time, but today the top plank has already been cut to make that shelf in the closet. I'm going to reuse as much as I can from this ol' beast.
